Rugged handheld devices are purposely built for unforgiving applications. They combine the benefits of typical consumer PDAs and industrial mobile computers into a single robust package.

Although rugged, the devices are generally small and lightweight, but unlike PDAs they are able to provide targeted functionality. They are ergonomically designed with an array of keyboard layouts, touch screen facilities and a range of integrated barcode reading capabilities available. The option of enhanced wireless connectivity is the key with the capacity for 802.11a/b/g (commonly known as ‘wireless’) compatibility, Cisco certified compatibility (a typical wireless network infrastructure) and Bluetooth.
