Bisphenol A (BPA) Content in DT Labels

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Recent media reports have highlighted the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in thermal receipt papers. BPA is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic resins, epoxy resins and other products. Plastics containing BPA have been in the market for more than 50 years.

BPA is used in small quantities on some direct thermal products as a developer that reacts with heat to produce the image. Zebra has worked with its suppliers to provide a list of BPA free materials and to confirm which materials do contain BPA.

HC100-300E-0000 HC100 Wristband Printer

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Developed specifically to meet the unique needs of healthcare providers, Zebra’s reliable HC100 Patient I.D. Solution makes wristband printing easier and more cost-effective than laser solutions.

This solution combines the reliable HC100 direct thermal printer with easy-to-load cartridges containing the industry’s only antimicrobial-coated wristbands—Zebra’s Z-Band wristbands.

Minimal training! Pop the wristband cartridge into the HC100 printer—print individual wristbands on demand. Compare these two simple steps with laser printing, which often requires staff to load forms into a special tray, print labels, apply a label to the band, and fold a laminate over the band.

The HC100 printer detects wristband size—adult, pediatric, infant—and automatically calibrates its settings for optimal print quality.

Honeywell Electronic Article Surveillance

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

EAS is a technology used to identify articles as they pass through a gated area. This identification is used to alert someone that unauthorized removal of items is being attempted. EAS systems are useful anywhere there is an opportunity for theft of items of any size. The primary environment for an EAS system is retail stores; however, an increasing number of warehouses and distribution centers are installing the equipment.

Three types of EAS systems dominate the retail industry: radio frequency (RF), electromagnetic (EM) and acousto magnetic (AM). A fourth technology, microwave (MW), was the first technology used for anti-theft systems and is far less reliable and accurate than the three aforementioned systems. In each technology, an EAS tag or label is attached to an item. The EAS tag/label is in an active state when guarding against product theft. When in the active state, a tag will sound an alarm if passed through the detection field located between EAS pedestals.

Zebra Solution for Oracle Retail Store

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Using Oracle Retail Store Inventory Management (SIM) for bar code labeling helps you meet or comply with the labeling guidelines set down by your customer. The customer, whether it is a retail firm, shipper, or manufacturer, has created its own labeling specifications to fulfill its label requirement needs. It is up to the supplier to meet those guidelines. Failure to do so could result in return of product, penalties, or contract termination.

Organizations like the Uniform Code Council (UCC), the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC) have developed specific industry labeling standards. Their guidelines minimize problems between trading partners by creating a basic structure that all suppliers and customers can agree upon.

For more information, please download the white paper below.

Intermec and the 2D Revolution

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

SummaryTwo-dimensional bar codes have quietly revolutionized many production, tracking and maintenance processes. Now, 2D bar coding is undergoing a revolution, thanks to important scanning technology advances and growing use in multiple industries. 2D applications are being adopted at more than double the rate of traditional 1D bar code technology, according to market research firm Frost & Sullivan.

Adoption is growing because companies are taking a fresh look at how 2D bar codes can meet their information, identification and traceability needs. The fundamentals of 2D technology capabilities, limitations and compatibility with legacy bar code processes have changed – and have changed faster than perceptions about the technology. Companies who have reexamined what 2D can do are benefiting from the effort.

For further information about the 2D revolution, please download the below white paper from Intermec.

The 2D Revolution – How evolving business needs and improved technology are driving explosive growth in two-dimensional bar coding

Psion Teklogix and Rugged Terminals

Saturday, September 11th, 2010

Providing mobile workers with computing devices that help them do their job in the field creates great opportunities to improve organizational efficiency and productivity. When deploying into mobile environments, ruggedness is a key consideration – not only must devices be able to support the application, they must also withstand the physical challenges inherent to potentially tough environments.

Mobile computing devices must be able to endure the shocks, drops, vibrations, dust, water, and extreme temperatures that accompany the harsh conditions faced by mobile workers. But it’s not just about looking for the most rugged device as different applications and environments require devices with different degrees of ruggedness. You don’t want to over-spec or under-spec the device. For example, why spend on a device designed for the freezer when your workers will never enter this environment? Conversely, not considering a freezer-focused device for this particular application can result in increased device failures and may prove costly in the long term. Therefore, customers should consider the characteristics of their environments and applications and then choose the most appropriate device.

The below document provides insights to help evaluate the ruggedness of a mobile device and determine its fit for a given scenario.

Ruggedness: How do you know if your mobile computing device will withstand your tough environment?

Zebra Launches 4 New Label Products

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Zebra is launching 4 new paper label products. These papers will broaden and improve the range and offer greater flexibility to our customers. The new products are as follows:

Z-Perform 1000T High-Tack and Z-Perform 1000D High-Tack. These economy paper products (thermal transfer and direct thermal respectively) have a rubber based adhesive and give greater initial tack and wider temperature performance when compared with the standard Z-Perform 1000D and 1000T products.

Z-Perform 1000D Deep Freeze is an economy direct thermal label with a special adhesive which can be applied and used at low temperatures, but can also be used as a re-positionable product at room temperature.

8000T Semi Gloss Blockout is a new thermal transfer blockout material. Due to popular demand, we have added a thermal transfer blockout product to complement the 8000D Blockout. 8000T Semi-Gloss Blockout is an opaque paper product which can be used in the same way as 8000D Blockout to cover up existing information e.g. for retail re-pricing labels.
