A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows certain data on certain products. Originally, barcodes represented data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies.

They also come in patterns of squares, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns within images termed 2D (2 dimensional) matrix codes or symbologies. Although 2D systems use symbols other than bars, they are generally referred to as barcodes as well. Barcodes can be read by optical scanners called barcode readers, or scanned from an image by special software.

Zebra is launching two new synthetic label materials to extend its supplies range and offer even greater choice to customers. The products are 8000T Extra Tuff 180 Tag, a non-adhesive synthetic tag, and Z-Ultimate™ 2500T White, a gloss white self adhesive polyester.

8000T Extra Tuff 180 Tag is a strong synthetic tag product, suitable for many outdoor and indoor applications such as garden centre plant tags, lumber tags or anywhere where a strong, economical tag is required. It is stronger, but lower in cost than Zebra’s 8000T Tuff 180 Tag and is ideal for price sensitive applications. 

Z-Ultimate 2500T White is a new lower cost addition to the Z-Ultimate family of gloss polyesters. It is ideal for applications such as asset tracking and serial plate labels and offers excellent performance at a lower price than Z-Ultimate 3000T White. It does not replace the popular Z-Ultimate 3000T White, but offers a lower cost alternative for those applications which require a more economical option.

Selecting the best thermal material for printing load manifests, proof of delivery documents, invoices, payment receipts, pick lists and many other documents is very important. Direct thermal material is engineered much differently than the standard paper used in dot matrix printers and hand-written documents. It contains chemicals that allow the paper to produce an image once heat is applied to it, and there are many paper and synthetic formulations to choose from.

While they look similar, the chemical make-up of each material affects its resistance to moisture, heat, and other external factors. The thickness of the paper, and the lifespan of images printed on it, also vary. All of these attributes are very important to consider to ensure documents remain intact and readable during their useful life.
